Belize is home to a wealth of musical talent, and one artist steadily rising in the gospel scene is Royal J. His story is one of faith, dedication, and a passion for music that started at a young age. 

We had the opportunity to ask Royal J about his journey into music, the challenges he's faced, and what inspires him to continue creating.

How It All Began: Music and Faith

Music has been an integral part of Royal J's life from a young age. His musical path started in the church, where he initially took up playing the drums. He started playing at just five years old, and that early connection to rhythm and worship became the foundation for his musical journey. However, his path wasn’t always smooth. As a child, he often turned down opportunities to sing due to shyness and a fear of performing in front of a crowd.

"It wasn’t easy," he admits. "but through faith, I broke free from what once crippled me and embraced what I now know is my calling."

Influences that Shaped His Sound

Royal J draws inspiration from several key figures who helped shape the artist he is today. His father, also a drummer, was a huge influence, nurturing his love for music from an early age. Outside of his family, Royal J looked up to gospel artists such as Papa San, Positive TNT, Samuel Medas, and DJ Nicholas. He shared that the passion and dedication these artists showed in both their music and faith deeply resonated with him, inspiring him to follow a similar path.

A Pivotal Moment: Embracing a Career in Music

The turning point in Royal J's career came when he wrote his first original song, Never Too Late. It was then that he fully grasped the talent God had given him, realizing that music was more than just a hobby—it was his calling.

Since then, Royal J has committed to building his music career, using his voice and talents to inspire listeners and spread a message of hope and faith.

Overcoming Challenges: The Journey So Far

Like many artists, Royal J has faced his fair share of challenges. As a Belizean Gospel artist, one of his biggest struggles has been gaining support from the local community.

Leveraging platforms like YouTube and streaming services, Royal J has managed to reach audiences in other countries, even securing interviews with international blogs.

"There was a time when I experienced writer’s block—a tough season for any artist," he recalls. "I managed to overcome it. Since then, lyrics have flowed effortlessly, and I feel more aligned with my purpose."

Milestones and the Road Ahead

Despite the challenges, Royal J has experienced several milestones along the way. One of his proudest moments was when he officially released his music on Spotify, which opened the door to other digital platforms.

"Now, my songs are available on multiple streaming platforms, and I’m working hard to grow my audience and book more concerts."

Although his journey has just begun, Royal J is confident that with faith and dedication, great things are ahead. He remains committed to spreading God’s message through his music, no matter the obstacles.
